DVBViewer Pro Beta 7.3.1.5

The DVBViewer Pro beta version 7.3.1.4 has been updated in the Members (Download) Area -> Beta Section to version 7.3.1.5. More about it in this post.

Changes in Version 7.3.1.5:

Fix: OSD: Navigation with the OSD Right action did not work correctly on some pages, particularly on the Movies, Music and Images page. Depending on the display mode of the content list (List View or Icons) it was not possible to navigate from the button column at the left to the list at the right (since 7.3.1, see here).

Fix: Plugins: Measures against access violations caused by OSD plugins (like the one installed with the Blufuzz OSD skin) in additionally running DVBViewer instances, particularly disabling channel switching in these instances altogether.

DVBViewer Pro Beta 7.3.1.4

The DVBViewer Pro beta version 7.3.1.3 has been updated in the Members (Download) Area -> Beta Section to version 7.3.1.4. More about it in the previous post.

Changes in Version 7.3.1.4:

Fix: Recorder: When playing files from the internet (e.g. HbbTV content), downloading them by using the DVBViewer record function failed with an access violation if DVBViewer was configured as Media Server client with “Send timers to the server” switched on (since 7.2.2, see here).

Change Log DVBViewer Pro 7.3.1.0

Added/Change/Fix: Playback Components Options: General rework and several minor fixes, among them the following points:

Added: DVBViewer now allows to use audio formats in the Auto B Conditions input lines and also in the “Conditions” line of filter graph preset files (.fgp, see here). The new conditions are MP2, MP3, AC3, AAC, PCM. The mouse-over hints for the Auto B Conditions input lines have been updated accordingly.

Change: Special Video Renderer settings now only appear on the Video tab, not on the Audio tab anymore. The Auto B Conditions input lines now appear on all tabs, not only on the Video B / Audio B tabs

Change: For Windows 8 and later, the Microsoft DTV-DVD Video/Audio Decoders have been excluded from the MPEG2 Video and AC3 Audio decoder selection and also from DVD Decoder selection, except if DVBViewer detects that the Windows DVD Player is installed. If not, Windows 8 and later do not support decoding of these formats. Additionally Decoders have been excluded from the decoder selection for DVD playback, that actually don’t support DVD playback (MEDIATYPE_DVD_ENCRYPTED_PACK input).

Added: MP2 Audio Decoder selection for DVD playback (previously only the AC3 decoder was selectable). DVBViewer determines the audio format by checking the audio tracks of the first DVD title. If one or of them is not MP2, it uses the decoder selected for AC3, otherwise the one for MP2. Please note: The detected audio format only influences the used decoder on playback start, not later on audio track changes. Generally audio decoders suitable for DVD playback are expected to support all audio formats specified for Video DVDs (MP2, AC3, DTS, LPCM) and to be able to switch between them seamlessly.

Added: MP3 Audio Decoder selection for Picture in Picture, particularly for playback of internet radio streams.

Added/Change/Fix: Image Display: Enhancements for displaying still images (photos etc) in DVBViewer. Generally there are two ways of displaying images: Either as OSD Slideshow with optional animation effects. Or statically by using DirectShow components, as for other media files. The OSD slideshow takes over, if Options → Images → Play images as OSD Slideshow is switched on and more than one image is passed to the DVBViewer main window, either as selection of image files (via drag & drop or Playback → Open Media File) or as a folder containing image files (via drag & drop or OSD Main Menu → Media Center → Images). OSD Slideshows stop TV/video playback, but not radio/music playback, that continues in the background. Like other OS pages the slideshow can be switched off with OSD Menu (Esc key) or OSD Back (space key). In other cases than the ones mentioned above (single image, other sources) DVBViewer uses DirectShow playback and additionally its playlist for more than one image.

Change: DVBViewer now consistently uses the “Generate Still Video” source filter (provided by Windows) for displaying JPEG, GIF and BMP files via DirectShow. PNG images, that are not supported by “Generate Still Video”, have to be handled with the LAV source filter as “single picture video”, which may cause issues depending on the Video Renderer and its settings.

Added: Images offered by the UPnP window can now be displayed in the main window via DirectShow. Previously the Play button in the UPnP window did not take effect if an image was selected. The same applies to image URLs entered in the Playback → Open URL dialog. Images from these sources are downloaded first and stored in a temporary file, because “Generate Still Video” can’t process URLs.

Change: The OSD pause icon does not appear anymore in the main window while an image is displayed via DirectShow.

Added: The “Playback → Open Media File” dialog in the main window as well as the “Add Items” dialog in the playlist window offer to select “Image Files” as file type in the drop-down list at the right, for displaying only image files. Please note that both file dialogs support multi-selection in the usual Windows way.

Added: Image files in the DVBViewer Playlist are now automatically displayed one after the other. Options → Images → Display Duration specifies how long an image remains visible until the playlist switches over to the next item. Previously the switching had to be triggered manually for images. Thus the playlist can now also be used for slideshows, but without animation effects.

Fix: The OSD Slideshow could not process filenames containing Unicode characters that were not covered by the local character set. Items in the OSD Slideshow context menu (opened with OSD Blue) were not translated. If the EVR Custom Video Renderer was used and an OSD Slideshow already going on, starting another OSD Slideshow by dragging image files into the DVBViewer main window failed with an access violation.

Fix: General: Some UI elements were (almost) invisible in Windows dark / high contrast themes (see here), particularly transparent black-on-white toolbar icons in the Teletext Window, the Playlist Window and the Control Bar, and also captions in the Pages tree view of the Teletext Window. Black-on-white icons are now inverted to white-on-black if such a theme is active.

Fix: General: The mouse-over-hints of the small DVBViewer taskbar icons were not translated.

Change: General: The command line parameter -new for starting another DVBViewer instance additionally to already running instances now starts the instance with the first unoccupied instance number (beginning with 1). Previously the instance number was the number of already running instances plus one (see 7.3.0 changes and here).

Added: General: New action “New DVBViewer Instance” (see actions.ini in the DVBViewer Program Directory), allowing to assign a keyboard or remote key to it.

Added: Main Window: Tweak “Show ‘New DVBViewer Instance’ item in menus” (→ launch Tweaker.exe). It adds a “New DVBViewer Instance” item to the TV/Radio sub-menus in the main window for launching another DVBViewer instance by using the -new command line parameter (see here). Please note that the tweak is a “per instance” setting. If additional DVBViewer instances have already been used before, the tweak must be applied to each instance separately (e.g. by dragging and dropping its setup.xml on Tweaker.exe).

Fix: Main Window: Functions assigned to the horizontal mouse wheel (or tilting the mouse wheel) did not work if the support for visually impaired users was active (see here). A double middle mouse button click switched full screen on/off, which could cause unwanted switching when using the middle mouse button for other purpose. Now only the left mouse button switches full screen on/off.

Fix: Main Window: On a start with a command line parameter that triggered an OSD prompt DVBViewer got stuck while displaying the start screen. The OSD prompt could not be answered, because the main window was still invisible. Now DVBViewer displays a Windows message box in this case.

Change/Fix: Volume Control: The code for the DVBViewer volume control has been simplified and restructured in order to work more consistently, particularly with regard to Picture in Picture and multiple DVBViewer instances. Among others this entails the following points:

Fix: Unmuting a DVBViewer instance, either by turning up volume or clicking “Mute” again, did not mute other running instances.

Change: The volume can now be adjusted in playback off state before playback gets started.

Change/Fix: The volume slider in the control bar now also takes effect on Picture in Picture, if Picture in Picture audio is switched on, and is updated when Picture in Picture volume changes. Previously the control bar volume slider was set to 0 (indicating muted Main Window audio) when Picture in Picture audio was active. Moving it additionally turned Main Window audio on, which is presumably unwanted in most cases.

Change: Clicking the Main Window with the middle mouse button now switches the Main Window to muted state, if it is not muted (see here).

Fix: The Mute function muted Picture in Picture audio, if active (introduced in 7.3.0), but unmuting it turned Main Window audio on. In Main Window playback off state the Mute function was deactivated, thus not available for Picture in Picture.

Fix: Switching Picture in Picture in its context menu from “Separate Window” to “Embedded in Main Window” mode or back unintentionally switched Picture in Picture audio off and Main Windows audio on.

Change: Switching Picture in Picture as a separate window to full screen does only switch Main Window audio off and PiP audio on automatically, if both windows are located on the same monitor, so that PiP full screen covers the Main Window completely.

Change: If a scrollable OSD element is visible and Picture in Picture audio active, the mouse wheel is now used for scrolling the OSD element, not for PiP volume control anymore. Previously the mouse wheel had no effect on OSD elements in this case.

Removed: Checkboxes “Remember volume for each channel” and “Remember stereo/left/right for each channel” from the TV/Radio Options, since these options are presumably not needed anymore. The according values stored in the channel list are ignored (see here).

Change: Subtitles: A subtitles selection for a channel resulting from “Options → Subtitles → DVB Subtitles → Enable automatically if available in the following languages” is not stored in the TV database anymore. Any manual subtitles selection stored in the TV database has priority and will persist. This applies to the Main and Picture in Picture window (see below).

Added: Picture in Picture: Subtitles display and subtitles selection in the context menu of the PiP window, except if the VMR7 is used as video renderer. Subtitles facilitate to keep track of what is happening on a PiP channel without audio. As for the main window, DVBViewer stores the last subtitles selection for a channel in its TV database. The selection is restored automatically when the channel is tuned again in the PiP window. However, there are priority rules:

If subtitles for a certain channel have been activated in the main window before, the PiP window displays them also if this channel is tuned. They can be changed or switched off manually for the time this channel is displayed as PiP, though.

The main window ignores any subtitles selection stored in the TV database for the PiP window (which means, it will not display these subtitles, unless selected manually). A subtitles selection in the main window overwrites a TV database entry created by the PiP window for the particular channel.

Added: Picture in Picture/OSD: Subtitles menu item in the OSD context menu for Picture in Picture (opened with OSD Blue or F8). It opens another OSD menu for PiP subtitles selection.

Added: Picture in Picture: New option “Change Size with Main Window Size” in the context menu of the Picture in Picture window. It applies to the embedded (not separate) PiP Window and lets DVBViewer increase or decrease its size proportionally if the DVBViewer Main Window size changes. If this option is switched off, the size of the embedded PiP window remains unchanged, unless resized manually.

Added: Picture in Picture: Selection of a PiP channel by right-clicking it in the Favorites sub-menu of the main and context menu in DVBViewer main window. Please note that the Favorites menu does not indicate whether a channel is currently available for PiP. If not, the right-click remains without effect (see here).

Change: Picture in Picture: DVBViewer now also resumes PiP playback after sleep mode / hibernation, if Options → General → Resume playback after sleep mode / hibernation is switched on. Previously the Picture in Picture window remained closed.

Change: Picture in Picture: The functions Resize Window, Channel Plus / Minus and Favorite Plus / Minus, that can be assigned to the vertical / horizontal mouse wheel on Options → Mouse, are now applied to the Picture in Picture window if it is in “Separate Window” mode and has the input focus.

Fix: OSD: The removal of the Alarm Timer code caused an access violation in the Sleep Timer OSD plugin (since 7.2.4.3, see here).

Fix: OSD: The OSD weather page did not work anymore. It only displayed an error message “Error getting the weather data” (since 7.3.0).

Fix: OSD: When using the mouse wheel for scrolling in OSD list views, DVBViewer did not check correctly whether the mouse cursor is inside the list view. The list did not respond to the mouse wheel if the cursor was located in the bottom part, but still responded if the cursor was located above the list.

Added/ChangeFix: OSD / News: Numerous enhancements and fixes concerning the OSD News page (by default located in the OSD Main Menu → Media Center sub-menu) and the processing of RRS news feeds. This particularly includes as new feature the playback of video/audio content offered by RSS feeds (podcasts, lists of radio plays etc.).

Change: The InfoSat news feed, that was one of default feeds set up by the DVBViewer configuration wizard, is not available anymore and has been replaced by the German Digital Fernsehen news feed (
Nažalost, nije dopušteno videti ovaj deo teksta za Goste. Molim vas da se prijavite ili se registrujete.
). However, this only takes effect on new installations. In old installations the obsolete InfoSat entry has to be replaced or deleted manually on Options → News.

Added: Reading of media links contained in RSS XML files (image, video or audio, the latter typically used for RSS based podcasts). DVBViewer is now able to (dis)play such content. Previously it only recognized some image URLs. The presence of media is indicated by a <Video>, <Audio> or <Image> tag in the first line of the (long) news item description, including the video/audio duration. Selecting an already selected item by pressing OSD OK (return key) or a mouse click lets an image show up or starts playback of video/audio content (see here).

Added: The first line of the news item description now displays the date and time when the news item was published (if this information is present in the RSS XML file).

Added: The OSD Blue context menu contains a new item “Open in Browser”, that opens an internet page corresponding to the currently selected news item, if available. Usually it leads to a more extensive version of the RSS synopsis.

Change: The heading above the list of RSS feed items now primarily displays the title of the news channel, as given in the RSS XML file. If no title is available, it displays the description entered by the user on Options → News. If the description is empty, it displays the name entered by the user, as before.

Change: If the user does not specify an icon/image as URL or file path on Options → News, the icon specified by the RSS XML file is displayed. If no icon is specified, DVBViewer now displays a default RSS icon (previously none).

Fix: After a change on Options → News DVBViewer did not adjust the list of news feeds offered in the OSD, but appended the changed list to the previous one, so it became longer and longer, until DVBViewer was restarted.

Fix/Added: OSD Green (F6) did not switch to the next news channel, as stated in the help text for the News page. OSD Yellow (F7) now switches to the previous news channel.

Fix: Issues concerning the navigation with OSD left, OSD Right etc. (the arrow keys) between control elements on the News OSD page with the default OSD skin. Some elements could not be reached in this way, in certain situations no element was focused anymore, which disabled keyboard navigation.

        Change: Help text updated.

Change/Added: The “Download feeds automatically” checkbox on Options → News has been renamed to “Always download RSS feed files (don’t read from cache)”. The functionality is the same, though. If checked, news feeds are kept as up-to-date as possible by downloading the XML RSS files again on each access. However, images associated with news are still read from the cache, if possible. The cache is located in the Images\Thumbs\News sub-directory of the DVBViewer configuration folder.

Added: New checkbox “Clear cache when DVBViewer closes” checkbox on Options → News → Cache Settings. If checked, it forces a complete update of RSS news feed files including images after the next DVBViewer start, because everything has to be downloaded again. The new “Clear Now” button enables clearing the cache manually.

Change: The list view containing the available news feeds on Options → News has been enlarged, so that more entries are visible at the same time. A new item is inserted at the currently selected position (previously always appended to the item list). If no item is selected, a new item is appended and automatically scrolled into view, if it is outside the visible area.

Added: Playlist Window: A new context menu item “Add RSS Podcast” opens a window for inputting a RSS Podcast URL, as it can be found on various sites in the internet. DVBViewer adds audio or video content enumerated in the RSS XML file to the playlist (mostly MP3 audio URLs, see here).

Added: Playlist Window: Adding playlist items with drag & drop into the playlist window, with the “Add Items” file dialog or “Add RSS Podcast” context menu item usually does not replace already present items, but appends new items without playing them immediately. However, if the Ctrl key is pressed while the operation takes place, the playlist window now clears the playlist before adding new items and starts playing them immediately.

Change: UPnP Server/Selection Window: Faster response if an entry of the UPnP folder tree view is expanded for the first time. Only data necessary for displaying the folder content is fetched from the server, no content of other nodes as before.

Fix: UPnP Server/Selection Window: UPnP server detection did not work under Linux/Wine because the method for enumerating local network adapters did not yield correct results. Now the UPnP code is based on the correctly working adapter enumeration method used for the Sat>IP server detection.

Fix: UPnP playback: Playing URLs containing an ampersand character could fail, because they were not XML-decoded (& is encoded as &amp;). This particularly applies to RTSP Sat>IP URLs received from Digital Devices OctopusNet servers.

Fix: DVD Playback: Under certain timing conditions DVDs were played with a wrong speed, particularly after restoring a DVD state for resuming playback at the last position where playback previously was stopped.

Change: DVD Playback: If a DVD structure is played from hard disk, DVBViewer now displays the name of the folder containing the structure as title instead of the filename VIDEO_TS.IFO.

Added: Media Server Client: If multiple Media Server instances are used on the same PC, DVBViewer now considers the instance number provided by DVBViewer Media Server 3.3.1.0 or later for checking whether it is “his” instance, in order to avoid useless attempts to connect to a stopped instance. Previously a (wrong) running instance could be mistaken for another (required, but stopped) instance. Please note that DVBViewer does not store a server instance number greater than 0 persistently, unless the Media Server instance is (re-)selected on Options → DVBViewer Media Server, or for Sat>IP in the settings of an RTSP Device on Options → Hardware, and the dialogs are finished with Apply/OK.

Fix: Media Server Client: DVBViewer did not detect the presence of a Media Server running as service on the same PC and did not connect to it anymore, if the localized name of the system account was not SYSTEM, as in some countries (since 7.3.0, see here).

Fix: Teletext Window: Even with disabled support for the visually impaired the textual teletext representation for the visually impaired could get the input focus, though it was completely covered by the graphical teletext representation. In this state the Pages tree view on the left did not respond to keyboard input until it was clicked or the tab key pressed.

Fix: Hardware: DVBViewer now disables input plugins before the PC enters sleep / hibernate mode and re-enables them after waking up, in order to prevent DVB devices with infrared receiver, that cannot cope with sleep mode while being active, from crashing.

Removed: Hardware: Support for the old DVB IPTV reception type, which is already integrated in the TS Stream branch since version 6.0.0. DVB IPTV channel list entries and INI imports are automatically converted to according TS Stream entries. Virtual DVB IPTV network devices are ignored when the device list is loaded and cannot be added to it anymore. If setting up the UDP/RTP interface IP address for receiving the streams is required, add a TS Stream device to the device list and select the interface in its settings.

Added: Hardware Options: The settings of virtual RTSP (Sat>IP) devices now allow to select the network interface (adapter IP address) that shall be used for receiving UDP streams from the Sat>IP server. The default is “Automatic”, which means, it is up to Windows to select a suitable network adapter. Selecting a specific one may be necessary if two or more network adapters are present, particularly virtual network adapters due to a VPN or virtual machine, and Windows selects the wrong one (see here).

Fix: Downloader: In certain cases the DVBViewer Pro Downloader reported a WinInet 12150 error (ERROR_HTTP_HEADER_NOT_FOUND) if the server response contained no content length indication in the HTTP header (see here).

Fix: EPG: The “preceding/following program” functions did not work properly if broadcasted EPG times contained fractions of whole minutes (e.g. 30 seconds), particularly when navigating in the OSD MiniEPG (since 7.3.0.0, see here).

Fix: Recorder: DVBViewer instances with activated Options → Recordings → Use Microsoft Task Scheduler mutually deleted scheduler entries created by other DVBViewer instances, because the timers did not exist in their own timer list. Furthermore the Task Scheduler always launched the first DVBViewer instance, not the one in which the recording was scheduled.

Fix: HbbTV: If active, HbbTV uselessly “consumed” the actions Channel Minus/Plus (-x8 / -x9 command parameters), so they could not be used for channel switching (see here).
